HOW MUCH DO YOU NEED TO GET STARTED BUYING STOCK?
Beginner investors want to learn about and invest in the stock market. They usually have a lot of questions about basic stock investing and one of the main ones is: how much do I need to buy stocks?
There is no one answer to that question but before I give you the minimum amount most people start with, I want to warn you about one thing. That is you should NEVER buy stocks with money you can’t afford to lose. If the stock market has shown us anything the last two years it is that you can lose most or all of any amount you invest. So, you should only be buying stocks with money you don’t need and money you could live without if the market turns south again.
That being said, most online stock brokers require a minimum of $2000 to open an account. Trading online will allow you to be charged less per transaction than you would in the past before the Internet came along and with $2000 or more dollars you can usually buy a reasonable amount of stock. When learning how to buy stocks you need to have an amount you are comfortable with and you can’t panic if your first stocks go down.
Any beginner investor will probably have an uncomfortable sick feeling when their portfolio goes down the first time. If you are investing with money you need, you should not be in the market. It is sort of like gambling where everyone advises to never gamble with money you don’t have or can’t afford to lose.
Buying stocks for the first time is exciting but inevitably, you will pick a loser and lose money. No longer will the stock market be as exciting a place and then you will probably just want to sell and get out. Beginners and experts alike always have an internal battle with themselves of when to buy and then sell a stock. Buying stock presents beginners with a lot of decisions and they should make sure they are investing an amount they are totally comfortable with so that they can make buy and sell decisions based on logic instead of feelings.
