UNDERSTANDING THE STOCK MARKET
The financial world of stocks is a complex beast that cannot be learned in a short time. Even if you do study hard for a concentrated period of time trying to learn as much as you can, you probably will lack the real world investing experience you need to go along with the knowledge.
Understanding the stock market is a lot more than just figuring out what some of the terms mean. If you want to ever be successful buying and selling stocks. you will need to do a lot more than learn how it all works.
What I mean by this is that a lot of successful stock investors go by instinct as well as statistics and financial reports. For instance, if you have the ability to have a good feel for what industries might do well in the future, you just might be able to pick the right stocks in those industries and do very well.
Years ago, I was sitting on an airplane and a young girl next to me was listening to her iPod. I had never seen one before (they had just come out) and I paid little attention. The very next week, Steve Jobs was on the cover of Time or Newsweek or some other big magazine and the story was about the resurgance of Apple and the new iPods. Now if I had been observant and paid attention to these two things, I just might have bought some Apple stock. Of course if I had done that, it would have been a very profitable investment indeed.
Understanding stocks and the complexities of investing in them is a lot more than just learning things like what averaging down stocks is, how to buy stocks after hours, or what dividend stock investing is. It is about getting a feel for the market and understanding that people’s perceptions of stocks and the companies behind them play a big part in whether they go up or down.
The hardest thing I ever had to learn is that the whole stock market moves on perception. Yes, fundamentals do play a big roll in those perceptions and how people feel about each stock, but ultimately it has to do less with fundamentals than just about what people think. You can have the greatest up and coming company in the world with the best product and if people don’t somehow realize it, that companies stock may go nowhere for a long time. It might even go down if people just don’t get it. Ultimately the profits will turn things around but that might not be for a long time.
If you want to learn how to buy stocks online for beginners, you should realize that learning that is just a very small step to what you need to know. Understanding the stock market and all its complexities can take a lifetime. You need to learn how to evaluate the financial aspects of the stocks you are interested in as well as have a feel for where the companies are going and the prospects of their industries in the future. The more you understand about people’s fears and how that affects the stock market the better off you will be in knowing when to sell and when to hang on to a stock.
You will also have to learn how you feel about buying and selling or buying and holding a stock for different periods of time. Do you like to get in and get out or do you like to buy value stocks let things play out over the longer term? Not only do you need to understand the stock market but you need to understand yourself and your risk tolerance which is different for everyone. This may take many years so be prepared for a long journey.
